Social anxiety has a deep impact on our lives, living with this disorder can be excruciating and it affects our normal daily activities. But how does it develop? where does this affliction suddenly erupt from? I know you also have these burning questions and are also looking for answers.
Let me bring you along in this short blog post to briefly explain how it develops and help you fully understand its genesis and what causes it.
This disorder develops from several factors, including genetic predisposition, childhood experiences, and unusual brain functioning.
Now that it’s top causes have been stated, let us dissect and dive into them to learn and fully understand its root.
Top Causes
Genetic predisposition
Social anxiety is likely to develop when one’s biological parent or siblings have the condition, it tends to run in families. Although, it isn’t entirely clear how much of this may be due to genetics and how much is due to learned behavior.
Childhood experiences
Negative childhood experiences like teasing, bullying, rejection, ridicule, or humiliation greatly contribute to developing this disorder later in life.
Other negative events in life, such as family conflict, trauma, or abuse, may be associated with this disorder.
When facing new situations or people, children who are timid, shy, restrained, or withdrawn tend to be at greater risk.
Abnormal brain structure
Amygdala is a structure in the brain that plays a role in controlling the response to fear, having an overactive amygdala can heighten the response to fear causing increased anxiety.
Also having appearance or condition that draws attention can cause feelings of self-consciousness which can trigger anxiety.
Conclusion
These points altogether are some of the ways one can develop this disorder over time. If this is something you relate to then be reminded that You are not alone! And also seek help.
